The Meaning of AIM

The core of all we do is centered in obedience to Jesus. AIM is a simple mnemonic that reminds us of His most significant commands. A good way to explain AIM is to start with one of the most common questions that people ask:

"What is God's will for my life?"

God created the world in order to show His great love to us. People sinned, causing us all to be separated from God. Jesus came to reconcile us to God, rescuing us from our sin and making a way for us to live in harmony with God and one another.

During His time here on earth, Jesus gave us many instructions to follow. All these instructions can be summarized in three profound statements which we commonly call the Great Commandment and the Great Commission.

The first and most important of these is to "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind"(Matt. 22.37).

The second is to "Love your neighbour as yourself" (Matt. 22.39). Jesus went so far as to say that all the law and the prophets hang on these two commands--essentially, He summed up the entire Old Testament.

In concluding His ministry, Jesus stated the third which is to "Go and make disciples of all nations...teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you" (Matt. 28.19-20). This is the essence of the New Testament and the work He expects every believer to do.

These commands can be summed up in a very meaningful and memorable form:

  • Accountability to One another - the challenge to strengthen our relationships with others (Matt. 22.39). This is the essence of love for one another and reminds us that love is action, not feeling.

  • Intimacy with God - the challenge to deepen our connection with God (Matt. 22.37). Our greatest expression of love for God is not acts of devotion or lip service, but our heartfelt obedience to Him.

  • Multiplication of the Kingdom - the challenge to broaden our influence in the world (Matt. 28.19-20). When every believer gets involved, the Good News can spread rapidly in every direction, reaching vast numbers of people.

"What is God's will for my life?" Nothing could please God more than for you to obey these 3 commands. The "aim" of whole your life is to show your love to God and others and to give as many as possible the opportunity to know Him.

The AIM Pattern is a visual aid illustrating these three commands and how they provide a framework for our training groups and churches. You can download the AIM Chart here:
